Childpeace Montessori

Located in a conglomeration of old warehouses, the school’s existing space lacked an overall sense of cohesion and organization.  The existing skylights informed the organizing principal for the building’s circulation space and defined spaces within the larger building envelope with soffitted planes to create a sense of enclosure and a more child- friendly scale.  The use of color throughout the school provides a way-finding device to help children orient themselves in the building.  In keeping with the exposed post and beam character of the existing building, new wood slats were used to unify the various means of vertical circulation and provide a sense of warmth to the overall building.
