City of Portland Fire Station 28

Limited by a site area of less than 8,500 square feet, our building addition was carefully sited to provide direct access to Sandy Boulevard and resolve a significant elevation difference across the site.  A newly constructed wing contains the main apparatus bay on the first level with a kitchen, dining/day room and a South facing terrace on the second. The historic building was renovated to house the watch room, exercise room, an auxiliary apparatus bay on the first floor and crew quarters on the second.

The new structure was designed to complement the materials, scale and proportions of the historic station with contemporary form and detailing. The structures are connected by a multi-story transparent circulation knuckle rendering the stairs and fire pole visible to passersby through a full-height glass curtain wall system, offering glimpses of the firefighters as they spring into action.  The entire facility was designed to meet current seismic/structural standards for essential facilities.
