Oregon Supreme Court Honored with Metamorphosis Award

By Hennebery Eddy

Hennebery Eddy’s historic rehabilitation and seismic retrofit of the Oregon Supreme Court Building was honored with a 2024 Metamorphosis Award in the historic category. Sponsored by Retrofit Magazine, the Metamorphosis Awards recognize architects, designers, and contractors for excellence in renovations, retrofits, and rehabilitations. This is the seventh award for the Oregon Supreme Court project, including recognition for design, restoration, engineering, and other industry honors.

The c.1914 Oregon Supreme Court is the oldest government building on Salem’s Capitol Mall. The project team took a forward-thinking approach to both preservation and resilience, including significant energy-saving upgrades and base-isolation to preserve the classical details and structural integrity in the event of a major earthquake. The Supreme Court is now one of only two historic buildings in the nation that is both certified LEED Gold and base isolated.

Congratulations to the Oregon Judicial Department, the Oregon Department of Administrative Services, and the entire project team: Forell | Elsesser Engineers, KPFF Consulting Engineers, Interface Engineering, Hoffman Construction, Knot Studio, The Harver Company, Portland Coatings/Williamsen & Bleid, JS Perrot, EC Company, Hydro-Temp Mechanical, and Pence/Kelly Concrete.

The Oregon Supreme Court Building’s Metamorphosis Award will be featured in Retrofit’s November/December 2024 issue. The awards were selected by a panel of industry judges. A full list of award-winning projects can be found on the awards website.
