Hennebery Eddy is headquartered in downtown Portland and has been since its founding. For 30+ years, we have remained committed to our city and its sustainable, healthy development. Portland is recognized as a beacon for urban planning, renowned for sustainable design, thoughtful growth, and celebration of the pedestrian experience. Through project work and community service, we continue to advocate for net-positive design solutions, the sustainable preservation of our cultural and historic resources, and a dense and vibrant urban core where people can thrive.
Our approach to urban planning and design promotes an active and pedestrian-oriented street-level environment. We take personal ownership of our city’s sustainable development; for the past 20 years, our staff have continually served on design, historic landmarks, planning, and sustainability commissions in Portland and the metro area.
Inspired by long-term thinking and our Northwest surrounding, we strive not just to maintain the integrity of our natural and built environment, but to improve it. Our net-positive approach emphasizes healthy, efficient, and adaptive designs that connect people to nature and contribute to a regenerative future. Learn more
Led by a team of regional experts, we remain on the forefront of preservation best practices. We apply what we’ve learned in the Northwest to communities throughout the region — and beyond. Our Portland-based team’s planning, preservation, and design work includes partnership with federal agencies like the National Park Service and General Services Administration, higher education campuses in several states, and the leading regional airports in the West. With technological and subject-matter expertise, our Portland headquarters supports the broader firm.

In 1992, partners Stephen J. Hennebery and Timothy R. Eddy founded a Portland design firm driven by these core values: innovative design, responsive service, and staff who take ownership in their work. Following Steve’s sudden passing in 1998, Hennebery Eddy Architects has continued to grow and evolve while remaining true to its aspirational beginnings. An entrepreneurial spirit and love affair with the outdoors unite our team. Here, we commute by bike and bus, hike rain or shine, indulge in the city’s celebrated dining scene, and are long-time season ticket holders for the Portland Timbers and Thorns. We actively support the civic, cultural, and industry organizations making a difference in our city and region such as the Oregon Food Bank and Architecture Foundation of Oregon. And we approach design as a team sport — where all team members are invited to contribute.
Located in the historic Pittock Block in Portland’s West End, our Portland studio is our largest office and firm hub. See yourself in the Rose City for the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects — from commercial renovations helping revitalize downtown to the rehabilitation of National Historic Landmarks, both local and in national parks throughout the West.

In honor of Earth Week, let`s take a look at Bend Science Station Learning Laboratories! Located on the OSU-Cascades campus, this AIA award-winning learning space is one of the first buildings of its type in Central Oregon designed to produce more energy than it consumes on a net yearly basis, thanks to a combination of rooftop solar panels and energy-use reductions like high-efficiency heat pumps, water heaters, and lighting – in addition to passive measures like building orientation and natural ventilation systems.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The 3,750-square-foot building features two state-of-the-art learning labs, a laboratory prep room for guided research, and a teacher training lab and observation space. The creation of the Bend Science Station has allowed the #STEM program to increase capacity, deliver new programming, develop new partnerships, and serve as a public resource for science education in Central Oregon. 📷 @chrismurrayproductions and @alanbrandt

In the lobby of the Columbia Square Building in downtown Portland, our goal was to create a welcoming space for tenants and visitors that is flexible, contextual, and allows for future adaptations. We raised the ceiling height by nearly 12 inches, reduced ambient noise with acoustical ceiling plaster, and balanced interior lighting with natural daylight. A restrained material palette complements the existing building and introduces warmth and texture, distinguishing the space`s fixed elements such as the reception desk. Client: @melvinmarkcompanies. Hennebery Eddy’s in-house Historic Resources Group conducted a complex exterior condition assessment of the terra cotta, brick, granite, steel-frame windows, and aluminum spandrel panels at the Seattle Federal Office Building, which occupies a full block of downtown. Our Project Development Study offered feasible, best-practice conservation strategies for the repair and restoration of specific materials and components of the distinctive Art Deco style. Our experts also created a design-build treatment implementation plan to help the GSA hire a team to complete the selected treatments.

We`re working with the University of Oregon to renovate and restore two of its oldest buildings - University & Villard Halls. The Heritage Project site is one of only 17 designated National Historic Landmarks in Oregon. We will be renewing the historic character of the structures, while also making seismic, fire, and accessibility upgrades. University & Villard Halls will be home to modern, flexible teaching facilities that will keep these buildings relevant for another 150 years. Image via Oregon Digital.

At Oregon State University, we transformed historic Strand Agriculture Hall into a modern learning environment while retaining the character of the original building.
Along with seismic upgrades, our design prioritized integrated, universally accessible entrances and ramps with social spaces and art, forming three hearths where students gather, connect, and study. A new historically compatible entrance portico and terrace were integrated into the west elevation, providing a high-profile entrance and heightened identity fronting the campus quad and historic district.
