The Sparks Athletic & recreation Center at Willamette University houses facilities for both the university athletic program and campus recreation. Our LEED Gold renovation reorganized and expanded the existing mixed-use fitness center, improved circulation, increased connections to the campus, and infused natural light into the interior. The existing fitness center was expanded to include individual and group exercise/training spaces, an enlarged multipurpose room, and a student lounge that serves as a hub of activity. In order to better fit the needs of athletes who use the facility, the expansion increased the number and size of team locker rooms and improved restroom access. In addition to these healthy space improvements, the project incorporated energy efficiency upgrades and resourceful materials, such as reused wood flooring from old university racquetball courts. Future phases of the project include renovating the exterior skin of Sparks Center with a new entrance façade that will enhance the fitness center’s connection to the campus while mitigating failing existing brick cladding.
