Hennebery Eddy specializes in crafting timeless projects that integrate historic architecture with modern elements to extend their lives and enhance their stories. Our in-house historic services are integral to and reflective of the firm’s mission to inspire, embrace, and renew. Through the lens of sustainable preservation, we craft future-focused restoration and maintenance solutions that promote long-term stewardship while addressing our climate crisis.
Our Historic Resources Group comprises a dozen in-house experts who provide the full spectrum of historic services while advancing industry best practices. They are LEED-accredited historical architects, historians, and preservation specialists, cross-trained in assessment, design, materials conservation, and architectural history — all meeting or exceeding the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Qualifications for Historic Preservation Professionals. Passionate about preservation, they work as integrated design team members to develop innovative yet appropriate solutions.

Our approach is to maximize sustainable measures while maintaining historic integrity. Building on our expertise in historic materials and assemblies, we tailor designs to take advantage of a structure’s inherently sustainable features in tandem with selective replacements. Solutions focus on resiliency, energy need reduction and efficiency, and life-cycle costs, coupled with guidance from established preservation standards and best practices.

We employ industry-leading tools and technology to investigate and evaluate. Our conservation lab offers sampling, microscopy, and color matching of historic painted finishes; identification of metal and wood finishes; and identification of wood species. In the field, teams use borescope, ground-penetrating radar, resistance drill, moisture meter, infrared thermography, 360-degree cameras, GIS mapping, molding profiles, and a variety of hand tools.

We are a leader in advancing the sustainable preservation field, helping our clients, colleagues, and communities manage their resources. Our staff are involved with the Association for Preservation Technology and Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School, volunteer with local historical societies, serve on the Portland and Bozeman historic landmarks commissions, and teach workshops through groups like the NPS Historic Preservation Training Center.
“I commend you for considering sustainable preservation practices and the ways in which they can be incorporated into the Painted Desert Community Complex, including the restoration of Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander’s many original design features that are inherently sustainable.”
